ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

We deliver many technical solutions for the rail industry including;• Safety Extra Low Voltage - (<50V) control systems.• Low Voltage - (230V, 400V &–650V) Domestic, Distribution and Signalling Supply Systems.• High Voltage - (11-25kV) Distribution and Traction feeders. • Critical Supply Systems - UPS, Traction Rectifiers, Diesel Generators, Changeover Panels Etc.• Lighting Systems - Level Crossing, Junction, Buffer Stop, Driver Walkway, Pedestrian, High Mast and Bridge Lighting.• Plant and Equipment - Points Heating, Pumps, HVAC, Oil Storage and Air Compressors.• DNO Supplies - LV and HV, management of DNO supplier, manufacture and installation of kiosks/cubicles.

CIVIL ENGINEERING

Primarily to support our M&E division our own civil teams are utilised for;• Foundations and Bases - PSP, REB, Generator, Kiosk Bases and Retaining Walls.• Under Track and Under Road Crossings - Multi Duct Routes Under Tracks, Roads and Car Parks • General Earthworks - Fencing Works, Vegetation Clearance, Temporary Roads, Pedestrian and Driver Walkways.• Route Works - Concrete and GRP (including elevated) Trough, Buried Route and Cable Containment.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

Primarily to support our Electrical and Civil divisions and with the aid of our Group associates IHC Engineering (UK) Ltd we design, manufacture and install many mechanical products including• Equipment Platforms• Access Stairs and Gates• Stainless Steel Kiosks/Cubicles. • Fencing • Vehicle and Personal Protection Barriers and Handrails.

RAIL INFRASTRUCTURE ENGINEERING

Our expertise in Rail Infrastructure Engineering spans over 20 years and with a vastly experienced workforce, management, planning and track access team we are able to undertake all of our Electrical, Civil and Mechanical Engineering Services on the rail infrastructure, using all industry recognised Safe Systems of Work.

Kent PHK Ltd recognise that innovation is a key driver in improving standards in the industry giving performance, maintenance and life cycle benefits on critical equipment.With innovation in mind, Kent PHK Ltd have a continuous development programme that has enabled us to produce a number of products for the industry:Off Grid Wind and Solar Supply Solution We are developing an Off Grid Wind and Solar supply solution for the use on "User Worked Crossings" or any application where power requirements are minimal (1-2kw per day).The advantage of not being constrained to the requirements and often prohibitive costs of a DNO supply, coupled with rapid installation timescales make the off Grid System an obvious choice.The Kelvatek 650v Signet Unit for Auto-configuration of Signalling SuppliesWe have provided technical and logistical support, including a test facility at our Mansfield office to allow this system to be put through its paces by Network Rail. This currently awaits Network Rail final approval. Modular Buildings We have designed, manufactured and installed a brand new solution for housing critical signalling and electrical switchgear. This modular building provides major benefits in aesthetics (it can be cladded to match surroundings) and can be installed/re-located inclusive of internal loads. It can also be delivered and erected on site where there are spatial constraints. These buildings also provide increased fire protection, sound proofing, reduced maintenance costs and a 25 year warranty.Points Heating A temperature controlled heating system is currently being considered that reduces the energy used in the standard points heating installations. Envisaged as a retrofitted device to the many thousands of existing points heating controllers already in service this could provide substantial savings to energy costs. LED LightingWe are currently developing lighting solutions using innovative ultra bright LEDs to reduce maintenance and to provide energy savings.

Although the company today is almost unrecognisable from where it began, it has maintained the strong family values on which it was founded. Kent PHK has vast knowledge and experience with Signalling power works having installed over 100 Principal Supply Points (PSPs), 350 Functional Supply Points (FSPs) and over 750km of power cable.

EXAMPLE PROJECTKent PHK Ltd Powering the Rugby and Nuneaton Projects to SuccessAs part of Network Rails ambitious £9bn West Coast Mainline upgrade, the re-modelling and re-signalling of Rugby and Nuneaton Stations were in themselves unprecedented in terms of size and complexity, The project took almost 4 million man hours to achieve and represented over 40% of all works undertaken on the WCML scheme. Kent PHK Ltd were contracted to design, construct, test and commission into operational service a fully functioning integrated trackside power system. This stretches over 45 miles of track and provides power to all equipment throughout including signalling, telecommunications, points heating, level crossing, buffer stop and driver walkway lighting, as well as various other domestic supply systems. The project was extremely complex in its nature providing many logistical and technical challenges, in addition to completion against extremely tight timescales to meet the December 2008 timetable improvements, a commitment made by Network Rail to the train operators and public alike. The following equipment was installed as part of this works:- • 18 number containerised Principal Supply Points (PSPs) with UPS and either traction or generator back-up. • 120 number Functional Supply Points (FSPs) and Power location cases were commissioned using the 400v Kelman Signet reconfiguration system.• Over 300km of power cabling was installed to various equipment • Points heating to 94 point ends • Drivers Walkway and Buffer Stop Lighting• The Project also included alteration works on the existing 11K.V and 25K.V Feeders

Kent PHK are one of the most experienced points heating contractors in the country. We have designed, built and commissioned over 1000 point ends to ensure that rail journeys are not disrupted even in the harshest of winters.

EXAMPLE PROJECTPreston North Points Heating RenewalsDescription of Works: The project consisted of installing, testing and commissioning of life expired equipment. • 4 new control cubicles• Heated 37 point ends • 78 equipment bases• 1 UTX• 10 hollow bearers• 1000 mtr of troughing Project Duration: This design and build contract was completed in 37 weeks with the last points going into operation October 2008.

All types of lighting projects can be undertaken by Kent PHK Ltd. Previous lighting projects have included Level Crossing, Junction, Buffer Stop, Driver Walkway, Pedestrian, High Mast and Bridge Lighting, and even putting red aspects on the Fourth Rail Bridge for Red Nose Day.

EXAMPLE PROJECTLedburn Junction LightingDescription of Works: The provision of 60 number 8m lighting columns mounted on spun and driven piles to provide the maintenance teams with sufficient lighting to carry out routine inspections and maintenance to the 900m long critical junction. Access platforms were fitted to the tops of piles on embankments; these were manufactured by Kent Group partners IHC Engineering (UK) Ltd.Project Duration: This build only project was carried out in just 12 weeks and was put into operational use in July 2009.Interesting Facts: Bridge 127 which passes under Ledburn Junction is known as Train Robbers Bridge as it was the site of the Great Train Robbery which was committed on 8th Aug 1963.

Power supplies to Fixed Telephone Networks (FTN).

EXAMPLE PROJECTFTN-GSMR Power SuppliesDescription of Works: Provision of power supplies for FTN equipment, one of the largest single investment projects on the rail infrastructure in the UK (£1.7 Billion). Kent PHK Ltd has designed and constructed approximately 100 power supplies for the FTN-GSM/R sites to date. The works per site vary but generally consist of the installation of a new DNO cabinet, trough installation, power cabling and commissioning of the new power supply. Project Duration: September 2009 to December 2012.

EXAMPLE PROJECTGlasgow Central Air CompressorsDescription of Works: The renewal of three 18kw air compressors, including the introduction of new dryers to facilitate the air requirement for the point motors on the crossing over the river Clyde on the approach to Glasgow Central Station.This project provided a much needed upgrade of the air producing equipment that satisfies the massive need to allow pneumatically operated points to function. The challenge for this project was to renew the life expired units in a timely manner, whilst also maintaining the full operation of all the air driven operational equipment.Project Duration: Design and build - 20 Weeks, commissioned into service September 2010.

AcousticsCompliant with Building Regulations Part E for non domestic buildings the sound reduction gained varies from 20db to 38db dependant on frequency (low to high)SizesUsing a Modular frame in 2.5m sections and working with two widths 2.4m or 2.9m there are a wide range of sizes available.FireThe Buildings are Class 1 for surface spread of flame to BS 476: Part 7 1987 and are Class 0 as defined by building regulations.Energy Efficient BuildingsWith a U Value of 0.44W/m2K these fully insulated buildings provide efficient thermal performance. Biologically they are immune from mould, fungi, mildew and vermin.

EXAMPLE PROJECTEdinburgh Waverley - Provision of Back Up Power SuppliesDescription of Works: This project saw the supply and introduction of a new PSP to supply the essential loads within Edinburgh Waverley Station. The PSP building for this project was purposely built in house by Kent PHK staff to match exactly the need and surroundings of the station environment. The challenges for this project were many and when working in the second largest main line station in the UK that sees in excess of 19 million passengers annually, it was no surprise. Our staff worked both day and night shifts to achieve the project completion in a safety conscious manner expected by our client Network Rail.Project Duration: Design and build - 39 weeks, commissioned into service February 2009.
